Evan Whitehead

As an accomplished career educator, becoming the youngest Assistant Superintendent of Schools in the state at age 34, life became more challenging as Evan began to experience a high level of stress, burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary PTSD, anxiety, depression, suicidal ideation, emotional dysregulation, low self-esteem, and unresolved guilt and shame. He resorted to unsustainable coping skills and maladaptive behaviors such as substance abuse, “People Pleasing”, “Self-Sabotage”, Victimhood, Overachieving, and Imposter Syndrome to mask his reality.

Eventually, everything led to a mental illness crisis and hospitalization in a treatment program for dual diagnosis (mental illness and substance abuse disorder). What Evan thought was his lowest and darkest point in his life, actually became an opportunity for rest, reflection, healing, healthiness, and personal transformation through the creation of his 3Bs: Balance, Boundaries, and Breaks TM.

3Bs: Balance, Boundaries, and Breaks

Evan’s 3Bs: Balance, Boundaries, and Breaks TM promotes a lifestyle of self-advocacy and is an integrated prevention and intervention based system providing insights, tools, and practices based on his lived experiences, rooted in mindfulness, mindset, accountability, emotional intelligence, bonding, attachment styles, Social Emotional Learning (SEL), faith, spirituality, DBT (Dialectical Behavioral Therapy), CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), and Neuroscience. All of this lead to self-discovery, healing, self mastery, freedom and personal transformation.

The 3Bs, has been implemented and adopted by celebrities such as multi-platinum artist Saweetie, and shared with Mary J. Blige; Kelly Rowland; Recording Artist and Chef Kelis; Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms; and has been highlighted in mainstream media outlets such as People Magazine, Essence Magazine, Vibe Magazine and The Source Magazine. Evan was named in the Top 50 Culture Builders of 2020 by Award Winning Culture and was also featured as a Champion of Equity in the March/April 2021 issue of “Equity and Access Journal.

Evan is a contributing author of three books: 100 No Nonsense Things That All Teachers Should Stop Doing, Evan’s chapter “Stop Playing The Role of The Martyr” includes his personal experiences as an educator that serves as a cautionary tale about prioritizing our own mental health, and wellbeing. “Because of a Teacher: Stories of the Past to Inspire a Future Generation” curated by George Couros, includes Evan’s learned lessons, written to first year teachers, about overcoming his mental health challenges, educator self-care, wellbeing, and personal transformation. In “True Story: Lessons That One Kid Taught Us” curated by Rachelle Dene Poth, Evan shares an experience with a student he had as a high school dean, that impacted his career as an educator and influenced the students life as well.

Today, Evan is clean, sober, living in sustainable recovery, stable mental illness, and is no longer just surviving, but thriving!
